Natalie Baini tells 6 News that she's "absolutely shocked" at the comments.
Independent candidate Natalie Baini has slammed a "bald-faced lie" from Treasurer Josh Frydenberg about her candidacy in the NSW seat of Reid.
At what's understood to be the campaign launch for incumbent MP Fiona Martin, Mr Frydenberg spoke about the Liberals having to defeat "fake independents."
"I'm seeing them in my seat, you're seeing them in your seat," he said in a video obtained by 6 News.
"These are independents who are running as a political party, that are organised as a political party, that are funded as a political party...that are running with the support of the Labor party & The Greens."
"And in my case, they are former members of the Labor party," Frydenberg said, referring to Kooyong candidate Monique Ryan.
The Treasurer appeared to be referencing a number of independent candidates that have the backing of the Climate 200 group, which includes Dr. Ryan.
However, Ms Baini is a former member of the Liberals, and does not have the backing of Climate 200.
"My immediate reaction upon seeing (the video) is that it is a desperate act from the treasurer on behalf of a desperate sitting member & a desperate government," she told 6 News.
"It's a misinformation campaign."
"I am a genuine independent."
